Walter K. Long

Walter K. Long, 84, of Pekin, passed away at 5:15pm, Friday, November 25, 2016 at Pekin Manor. Walter was born September 19, 1932 to Karl and Anna (Grille) Long in Spring Lake Township. He married Carol Kumpf on April 5, 1957 at St John's Lutheran Church in Pekin. Preceding him in death are his parents, two grandchildren, Heather Roberts and Hanna Holder; sister, Helen Deal and brother, Carl Long. Surviving are; his wife,Carol; three daughters, Karen (Dave) McCammon and Dodie (Monroe) Sheckler, both of Pekin, Joyce (Jim) Lonergan of Tremont;one son,Philip (Michele) Long of Green Valley; nine grandchildren, Kim Stout, Kevin McCammon, Tim, Steve, Mike, Ben and Ted Sheckler, Ashley Chambliss and Austin Lonergan; five great grandchildren, Julia McCammon, Kyla Yorama, Mose Roberts, Reed and Reese Chambliss; one brother, Larry (Sharelene) Long of Peoria, IL. Walter was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving during the Korean War. He worked at Ashland / Sherex Chemical for thirty-two years, retiring in 1994. He served as financial secretary for OCAW Local # 7-807 for twenty-two years.He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher, and on the Stewardship Committee. Walter was a wonderful and very successful gardener. He loved working, helping, talking, and anything gardening. He also enjoyed oil painting, fishing, hunting, golfing, and coin collecting. He treasured the many family vacations they took. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at St. John's Lutheran 711 Court St. Pekin with Rev. Daniel Bishop officiating.Visitation will be from 5:00 PM - 7:00PM Tuesday at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory, 2131 Velde Drive and from 10:00AM - 10:30 AM Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens, with military honors provided by the United States Air Force and the Tazewell County Ceremonial Team.
