Violet Cottingham

Violet Gray Cottingham, 96, of Pekin departed this life for her heavenly home at 6:52 am Sunday, September 11, 2011 at Pekin Hospital. Vi was born on January 18, 1915 in Champaign, IL to Glendon O. and Vina V. (Gray) Creighton. She married Eugene Leigh Cottingham on June 27, 1932 in Champaign. He died on Oct. 1, 1985. She then married Durward 'Tide' Whitton in 2001. He died in 2005. Also preceding in death are her parents, one grandson, Kent A. Sefton, one son-in-law, Duane Sefton, one brother and three sisters. Surviving are: two daughters, Mary Lou Sefton of Henry, IL and Peggy (Dr. Gordon) Colson of Zionsville, IN; grandchildren, Kristi (Joe) Klein, Kurt (Lori) Sefton, Creighton 'Chip' Colson, Christopher (Diane) Colson and Linda Sefton; great grandchildren, Brian (Tracy) Klein, Mark (Sherry) Klein, Kyle Klein (Jolene),Katie Klein ( fianc Michael Lou) , Creig (Allyson) Colson, Cassandra, Corey, Clayton, Courtney, David Colson, Rebekah and Rachel Sefton and Mickayla Marsh; great great grandchildren, Creighton and Addison Klein; one sister, Beverly Warner of Pekin. Vi was a member of First Baptist Church for over 80 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and served as a deaconess. She was a member of Pekin Women's Club, Kings Daughters, Christian Women's Club and Blue Tri Club of the YWCA. Vi held a weekly bible study group in her home with Ruby Thompson for many years. She also loved to entertain in her home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the First Baptist Church 700 S. Capitol St., Pekin. Rev. Mark Friday will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am - 11:00 Saturday at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Henderson Funeral Home in Pekin.
