Samuel P. Black

Samuel P. Black, 90, of Peoria, IL passed away peacefully at 9:52 AM Saturday, August 29, 2026 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.

Sam was born on March 21, 1936 in Clydebank, Scotland to William and Mary (Hogan) Black. He married Irene Dingwall Anderson on September 17th, 1965 at Dalmuir Old Parish Church in Scotland.

Sam and Irene first lived in Dumbarton, near Loch Lomand. After moving to Bothwell, Scotland, three beloved sons were born and baptized as infants at the local ancient church, the origins of which date to the 6th century.

Surviving are: his wife, Irene of Peoria; three sons, Ross (Karen) Black of Peoria, IL, Scott (Staci) Black of Geneva, IL and Gordon (Emily) Black of Palatine, IL; nine beloved grandchildren, Ryan (Bianka), Kyle (Emma), Chloe, Ivy, Cooper, Lyla, Ethan, Jillian and Gavin; Sister-in-law, Mary and nephew Kenneth of the UK.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Bill and brother-in-law Morris Drew Anderson.

As a young man, Sam was drafted into the Royal Air Force. Sam had an engineering apprenticeship with the singer Sewing Machine Company in Scotland. Later he received his Ph.D. at Glasgow University. Through his employment with Singer, he spent two years living and working in France. Later, he joined Caterpillar, Inc in Glasgow, culminating in his being transferred to CAT, USA. He retired as Director of Quality after 33 years. He was elected to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldwin Award; in which capacity he served the US Government.

Sam was always a keen swimmer. He also enjoyed golfing at Mt. Hawley County Club in Peoria. He was a participant at the now-disbanded Peoria Scottish/American Society. Sam was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and as President of Bible class for many years. Sam loved the Lord Jesus and gave Him all the Glory for the direction of his life.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 14, 2026 at Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria with Pastor John Hopwood officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service beginning at 10:00 AM. Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with Sam’s arrangements. Interment will be at a later date in Clydebank, Scotland.
