Richard Dean Hornback

Richard 'Dick' D. Hornback, 89, passed from this life to life eternal at 11:01 AM Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Dick was born on January 29, 1926 in Pekin, IL to Leslie L. and Gladys (Hendricks) Hornback. He married Betty Parke Scurlock on July 28, 1984 in Pekin. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. Surviving are: his wife, Betty of Pekin; one daughter, Susan Luetke of Golden, CO; one son, Daniel Hornback of Mesa, AZ; three step daughters, Cathy (Ralph) Brown of Springfield, IL, Rebecca (Terry) Gould of Santa Fe, NM, Sheila (Patrick) Miller of Pekin; one step son, Robert (Valerie Myers) Scurlock of North Pekin; two grandchildren, LeeAnn Kyle of Morton, IL and Benjamin Morgan of Golden, CO; one great granddaughter, Kaleigh Morgan; eight step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren and one step great great grandchild; one cousin, Bonnie Martin of Golden, CO; one sister-in-law Madelyn Hornback of Paradise, CA. Dick was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy serving in the Pacific theater flying a torpedo bomber. He loved talking about his World War II experiences especially the time when his squadron dropped food and supplies down to an American POW camp.He worked at Keystone Steel and Wire for 23 years retiring in 1981. He was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin. He received his pilot's license in 1947 and enjoyed flying planes for many years. Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, December 18, 2015 at the Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Jerry Tupper officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM Friday at the church. Inurnment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL on Friday, January 29, 2016. Henderson Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational United Church of Christ, 2200 Willow Street, Pekin, IL 61554.
