Raymond J. Smith, 94, of Pekin, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 6:49 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Ray was born June 11, 1931, in Manito, Illinois, to Raymond R. and Ethel (Allen) Smith. He married the love of his life, Mary Williams, on May 19, 1956, at Calvary Baptist Church in Pekin. Together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jacob Smith; and two sisters, Donna Smith and Ruth Dowell.
Ray is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Smith of Pekin; three daughters, Jean (Stephen) Grys , Rose Ingolia, and Susan Rushing, all of Pekin; twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of pride and joy in his life. He is also survived by two sisters, Rose Caulkins of Manito and Patty (John) Plummer of Tremont, along with many extended family members and friends who will deeply miss him.
Ray was a hardworking and respected member of the Pekin community. He owned and operated Smith Lath & Plastering in Pekin for many years, building a reputation for quality craftsmanship and dedication to his trade. In addition to his business, he served for many years as the Administrator of the Pekin Moose Lodge #916, where he formed lasting friendships and contributed greatly to the organization and its members.
Cremation will be accorded, and inurnment will take place at Glendale Memorial Gardens at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory in Pekin.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Raymond will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his commitment to family, and the kindness he showed to those around him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched.
