Phillip D. Smothers, 79, of Pekin, Illinois passed away at 2:02 PM Monday, August 23, 2021. He was at home and surrounded by his loving family. Phillip was born on February 5, 1942 in Valier, Illinois to Vernon and Mamie "Marie" (McBride) Smothers. He married Angela "Angie" Marie Denton on November 2, 1963. Angela passed away on July 9, 2008. Surviving are two daughters, Trenda Smothers, and Jamie (Nathan) Noyes, both of Pekin; four grandchildren, Jeremy Null, Justin Null, Noah Noyes, and Sarah Noyes; three great-grandchildren, Averie Null, Aubree Null, and Addysen Helmer. Phillip served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He worked at Keystone Steel and Wire for 16 years. He later worked as a welder at Caterpillar until his retirement in 2007. Phillip served as the Post Senior Vice Commander at the Pekin VFW, Post #1232, where he faithfully served and enjoyed volunteering his time and labor for the groups projects. He loved his family, enjoyed yard work and building projects to help others. He was also an outdoors-man who enjoyed fishing and target shooting. He was always quick to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Visitation will be Thursday, August 26 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory. Funeral services will be Friday, August 27 at 11 a.m. at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory with Pastor Nathan Noyes officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Prairie Haven Cemetery.
