Norman E. Harlan, 88 of East Peoria passed away on October 4, 2025, at Hallmark Healthcare in Pekin, Illinois. Norm was born on June 29, 1937, in Albany, Kentucky to Arthur and Annie (Ewing) Harlan. He married Doris Mae Huber on June 13, 1959, in East Peoria, and they shared many joyful years together until her passing on January 10, 2017. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, David, Howard, and Baylos; and two sisters, Mary and Ruth.
Norm was a member of UAW Local 974, where he dedicated 35 years of his professional life to Caterpillar Tractor Company as an inspector, retiring in 1991. He was greatly admired by his colleagues for his work ethic and integrity.
Norm will be remembered not only for his contributions as a working man but also for his profound love as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Norm's legacy of love and kindness continues through his children: Norman (Janet) Harlan of Edgefield, South Carolina; Teresa (Pastor Eric) Wooding of La Porte, Indiana, Ron (Carissa) Harlan of Pekin; and Pastors Chad (Tracey) Harlan of St. Joseph, Michigan. He also delighted in the company of his beloved grandchildren: Leah (Daniel) Bundren, Evan Wooding, Bethany Harlan, Tate (Katie) Wooding, Micah (Diana) Harlan, Chandler (Lily) Songer, Katie (Cody) Dodd, Hannah (Stuart) Clarke, Ben (Sammi) Harlan, and Jude Harlan, as well as his great-grandchildren: Brielle Sampson, Brooklynn Sampson, Emilia Wooding, and Annie Dodd. He is also survived by his sister, Pearl (Duane) Bristow of Albany, KY, along with many relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
Norm displayed a quiet yet engaging personality, known for his reserved demeanor complemented by a witty and funny sense of humor. He had a deep passion for music, enjoyed singing duets with his wife, and played the guitar, piano, and harmonica. His strong faith was a pillar of his life; he loved Jesus and dedicated time to teaching Sunday school, even serving as superintendent of the program.
In addition to his musical and spiritual pursuits, Norm was a jack of all trades, known for his handy skills in various fields, from vegetable gardening to maintaining an apple orchard. He leaves behind a legacy of creativity, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to his faith and family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 17, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 12:00 PM at Revive Church, 3212 Springfield Rd, East Peoria, IL with Pastor Robert Finley officiating. Burial will be in Fondulac Township Cemetery in East Peoria.
