Muriel F. Barger

Muriel F. Barger, 95, passed away at 2:17 PM Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton, IL. Muriel was born on January 14, 1921 in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada to John and Lillian (Ulrich) Galbraith. She married Eugene Wilson in 1941. He passed away as a pilot in service. She married Louray Barger on February 14, 1953 in Pekin, IL. He passed away on December 5, 1987. Also preceding in death is one sister, Eleanor Pfanz. Surviving are: her companion of over ten years, Lou Strang of Pekin; one sister, Mary Griffiths of Los Osos, CA; two step grandsons, Scott Barger of Peoria, IL and Michael Barger of Englewood, CO; one step great grandson, Brian Cole of Peoria; several nephews and great nieces. Muriel was a graduate of Pekin Community High School. She worked at Caterpillar, Inc. for 30 years in a shop office retiring in 1974. She was one of the first women to work in the shop at Caterpillar starting in 1942. Muriel was the oldest member of the First United Presbyterian Church which she joined in 1936. She was a former Sunday school teacher and elder at the church. She was a member of the Pekin YWCA, Miller Senior Center Booster Club, Pekin Women's Club, Caterpillar Retirees Club, 50 year member of Order of the Eastern Star #333 in Pekin. Friends of the Library. She was also a member of the White Cap Drifter Boat club in Peoria for many years. She enjoyed traveling and saw Europe, Russia, China, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada and all the U.S. States. She was a great fisherman. Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, June 18, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church with David Taylor officiating.A luncheon will be served afterwards. Visitation will be one hour before services. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Swan Lake Memory Garden in Peoria. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Presbyterian Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
