Rev. Kathleen E. Feeney-Bastian, 70, completed her life on May 17, 2017, at home in Peoria, Illinois, following a brave battle with lung cancer. Kate was born on September 26, 1946, to Edward L. and Lillian M. (Heitz) Feeney in Moline, Ill. She grew up in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from high school at Our Lady of Angels Academy in Clinton, Iowa. Kate received a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Hawaii. Following her call to ministry, she went to seminary at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Cal., and graduated with a Master's of Divinity Degree in 1984. Kate served United Church of Christ churches in Washington State and in Moline, Geneseo, Hinckley and Pekin, Ill. She also provided pulpit supply and interim pastoral support to several churches in Illinois. For several years, she was a Hospice Chaplain in DeKalb County. Throughout her ministry and life, she was a strong and vocal advocate for justice, peace and equality. Kate stood up for what was right, spoke up for those that couldn't, loved with an open and generous heart and comforted the uncomfortable. Kate was united in marriage to Robert Bastian on August 14, 1988, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Hinckley, Ill. Together they made their home in Hinckley, Sycamore and Peoria. He survives as well as four bonus' children: Marci (Ray) Papiernik of Sleepy Hollow, Ill.; Lisa (Jim) Chester of St. Joseph, Mich.; Jani (Rob) Wilson of New Richmond, Wis.; and Mike (Megan) Bastian of Hinckley, Ill. She was Gramma Kate to eleven grandchildren: Joey Bolino; Emma, Jacob, Daniel and Samuel Chester; Bailey and Jennah Wilson; Bailey Voorhees; and Ryan, Brooklyn and Tegan Bastian. She is also survived by her three sisters: Angie (Frank) Cassady of Arlington Heights, Ill.; Sheila (Mel) Leskinen of Yakima, Wash.; and Sarah Hitch of Tulsa, Okla.; her two brothers: Pat (Sue) Feeney of The Villages, Fla.; and Matt (Mary) Feeney of Eldridge, Iowa; brother-in-law Jim Goggins of The Villages, Fla.;her mother-in-law Jane Bastian of DeKalb, Ill., four sisters-in-law: Pat Bastian of Maple Park, Ill.; Elaine Moen of Sycamore, Ill.; Carol (Mike) Rutledge of Friendswood, Texas; and Linda (Darrin) Ott of Hinckley, Ill.; many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins, and her special friends Lolly, Scottie and Pat. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and sister-in-law Michael and Mary Anne Feeney, two sisters Rita Feeney Goggins and Jacqueline Feeney, and her father-in-law Wilbur Bastian. Kate and her family wish to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Illinois Cancer Care and OSF Hospice for their compassionate and thoughtful care. Cremation rites have been accorded and a Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 24th at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 324 W. McKinley Ave. in Hinckley, Ill., with visitation starting two hours prior to the service. Rev. Charlene Hinckley will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Hinckley Area Food Pantry, Box 463, Hinckley, IL. 60520. The Henderson Funeral Home and Crematory in Pekin is assisting with arrangements.
