Harold D. Scherer, 86 of Pekin passed away at 8:50 pm, Friday, April 12, 2024 at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria. Harold was born in Slater, MO on April 1, 1938 to William and Rena (Fizer) Scherer. He married Kathryn M. Neiderman on January 21, 1961 in Eau Claire, WI. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1997. He married Connie Peterson on February 20, 1999. She passed on April 30, 2018. Harold was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers William (Patricia) and Robert (Virgie) Scherer; sisters Darlene (Al) Pina and Mildred Sharp Harris; brother-in-law Jim Coleman. Harold is survived by his children William (Susan) Scherer of Kennesaw, GA; Margaret (Jim) Segersten of Dahinda, IL; John (Nicole) Scherer of Fishers, IN; Paul (Jennifer) Scherer of Pekin, IL; grandchildren William (Eryn) Scherer II, Shamus Segersten, Marisa Scherer, Hannah (Benjamin) Folgert, Alexander Scherer, Jacob Scherer, and Olivia Scherer; stepson, Chris Sondgeroth of Metamora, IL; stepdaughter Michelle (Mark) Cook of Pekin; step-grandchildren, Braden (Megan) Fogal and Baylee (Bryce) Weidrick; brother Herb (Ruth) Scherer of Marshall, MO; sister Shirley Coleman of Oak Grove, MO; and bother-in-law Jay Harris of Raytown, MO. Harold was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin. He worked for the Chicago & North Western Railroad as a conductor for 36 years, retiring in 1997. He was also the proprietor of Scherers Mini Storage & lil Barns in Pekin. Work was Harolds hobby and building was his favorite form of work. He enjoyed building lil barns, designing and building homes, and anything else he decided to build. In addition to being a self-appointed expert food critic, Harold volunteered for storm recovery for the major tornadoes in the Midwest; he worked tirelessly to help with the cleanup and rebuild. When not working, Harold enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends across the country. His greatest love was his family; he passed his love of building on to his children; he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to build things and attending their activities. Harolds Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am, Friday, April 19, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 303 S. 7th St, Pekin with Father Michael Andrejek officiating and Monsignor Tim Nolan as homilist. The visitation will be Thursday, April 18 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory, 2131 Velde Dr, Pekin, IL. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens, Pekin, IL. Memorials may be made to Catholic Relief Services.
