Obituary

Gordon Dale Spain, 89, of Chillicothe, passed away peacefully at 8:35 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2025, in the comfort of his home and in his favorite chair.

Born on August 10, 1936, in Logan, Illinois, to Roy and Nina (Hubbs) Spain, Gordon married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Todd, in Logan on September 3, 1955. Together, they shared 70 cherished years of marriage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, David Spain; one brother, LeRoy Spain; and one sister, Marilyn Bradley.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Darbi (Toby) Dietrich of Chillicothe, Illinois; one son, Dan Spain; four grandchildren, Chase (Zina) Dietrich, Drake Dietrich, Ava (Braden) Tilson, and Gage (Ellen) Spain; and one sister, Carolyn Roach of Thompsonville, Illinois.

Gordon was employed with Caterpillar for 42 years with 27 years being in Mapleton. He retired in 1997 to enjoy time with his family especially with his grandchildren. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, and any time spent with his grandchildren. During his earlier years, Gordon was a baseball coach and umpire in Marquette Heights, Illinois. An enthusiastic sports fan, he cheered passionately for the St. Louis Cardinals and Bradley University basketball. Above all else, Gordon enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in any activity they were doing. His grandchildren were the true light of his life, bringing him endless happiness and pride.

Gordon was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. His comedic timing and ability to make you laugh will be missed.

A private graveside service will be held at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, with Bob Murphy officiating. Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with Dale’s arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greater Peoria Honor Flight, P.O. Box 5072, Peoria, IL 61601.
