George L. McBride, 95, of Pekin, IL left this earth at 5:20 PM Friday, September 29, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. George was born on May 3, 1922 in Vienna, Johnson County, Illinois to J. Hobert and Daisy M. (Sleeter) McBride. George enlisted in the Marines in early 1942. He had to remain at home until his younger Brothers could take his place on the Family farm. He served with the Third Marine Division, Striking 9th from inception until being Honorably Discharged in 1945 at the Victory over Japan. He participated in 3 major campaigns in the Pacific Islands Guam, Bougainville, and Guadalcanal some of the Bloodiest Campaigns in the war against Japan. Returning home to his Family in Peoria at the time, he went to work at Standard Brands in Pekin, where he met and married his Wife of 63 years, Lydia Lorraine Reuling on June 4, 1946 in Pekin. She passed away on August 22, 2009. Together they had one Son, Steve W. McBride of Pekin; Eventually, they received 5 Grandchildren, Kelly McBride, Jerrod McBride, Stacy McBride, Brian McBride, all of Pekin, Christy Little of Green Valley, and 5 Great- Grandchildren, Austin McBride, Lexi Lydia McBride both of Pekin, Jake Little of Green Valley, and Blake and Mallory McBride of Pekin. George was preceded in death by Brothers Laverne and Donald; Sisters, Dorothy, Aleine, Paulene, Betty, and infant Sister, Ruby Mae. His Mother preceded him in 1946 and his Father in 1969. He worked Standard Brands for 26 years retiring in 1971. He also worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation for three years and P.S. Olt Game Calls. He entered UnityPoint Health - Pekin September 17, 2017 suffering a major heart attack. He was released home under the care of hospice and the care of his Son and Grandchildren Kelly, Jerrod and Stacy who all tended to his needs 24/7 until he went to be with his Bride, Lydia Friday evening. George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, life member of Tobin-Nanninga Marine Corps League Detachment #85, William Schaefer Post #44 American Legion and Roy L. King Post #1232 VFW, all of Pekin. Mass of Catholic Burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, October 7, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Michael Andrejek officiating.Visitation will be from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Friday at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory, 2131 Velde Drive, Pekin. Burial will be in Woodrow Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps and the Tazewell Area Ceremonial Team. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to T.A.P.S., 100 Taps Lane, Pekin.
