Dorothy Rosalee Abernathy

Dorothy Rosalee Abernathy, age 90 of Pekin, formally of Aransas Pass, TX passed away at 1:47 am, Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at home surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born November 27, 1932 to Carl M. and Jennie (Scantlan) Jones in Cuba, MO. She married Gale L. Abernathy in November of 1953. He preceded her in death. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gary Wayne Jones and Carl Mack Jones, three sisters, Thelma Edith Morey, Opal May Lawrence and Myrtle Belle Amerine and two sons, Gale Lee Abernathy and Carl Ray Abernathy, one daughter, Diana Rae Lemley and Grandson Brian Eugene Abernathy. She is survived by; two grandsons, Gale (Patricia) Abernathy of Pekin, IL and Anthony Lemley of Bardolph, IL and one granddaughter, Amanda (Curtis) Hurst of Tennessee, IL; two great-granddaughters, Faith & Hannah of Pekin, IL and one great-grandson, Cole of Tenneesse, IL and her great-great-grandson Boston. Two sisters, Hildred Marie "Sissy" Coons and Juanita Johnson of Aransas Pass, TX and one brother, Billie (Irene) Jones of Bushnell, IL as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Abernathy retired from King Seeleys after working there for several years and in later years she worked in management of Motels in Iowa, Oklahoma, and Texas. Dorothy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Aransa Pass, TX. Up until recently Dorothy could be found at her home in Southern Texas feeding the stray cats from the neighborhood or drinking a cup of coffee on her front porch. One of the many strays she cared for stole her heart and soon became her indoor cat named Tom. A visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Monday, March 13, 2023 at Henderson Funeral Home & Crematory, 2131 Velde Dr, Pekin, IL. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm, immediately following the visitation also at the funeral home. Cremation will be accorded after the funeral. A celebration of life will also be held at a later date at the Calvary Baptist Church in Aransas Pass, TX Memorials may be made to the grandchildren of Dorothy (Gale Abernathy or Amanda Hurst) to assist with funeral expenses.
